In the world of investment, where the market swings between fear and greed, Warren Buffett wrote a simple sentence of 12 words that has become a golden rule for investors worldwide.

Buffett coined this phrase more than forty years ago to summarize his long-term investment philosophy: to be greedy when others are fearful, and fearful when greed is rampant.

These few words carry a great lesson in understanding markets and managing risks, and have become a reference for anyone seeking to build wealth without being swept away by waves of panic or greed.

Warren Buffett’s statement wasn’t just a passing remark; it evolved into an investment philosophy that transformed the way millions of investors worldwide think.

Buffett himself applied this principle during major market crashes, buying when everyone else was fleeing and holding onto his stocks when panic was rampant, later reaping enormous profits.

With this philosophy, he built one of the greatest fortunes in history, exceeding $149 billion, at a time when many others lost their money due to emotional decisions.

His advice broke with traditional investment rules that chased quick profits, replacing them with an approach based on patience, rationality, and an understanding of human nature. In short, Buffett taught the world that wealth is not built by following the crowd, but by making decisions when others are afraid.

The secret of power

Buffett’s advice consists of only 12 words, fewer than 70 characters, making it easy to remember and spread.

He did not burden his advice with complex explanations, but rather used short, strong, and easy-to-pronounce words that a child of 11 or 12 years old could understand, according to Forbes.

Buffett used strong emotional language to highlight that fear and greed are “contagious” and last forever.

Everyone understands the meaning of fear and greed, even children, so the message goes directly to the reader’s feelings and not just his mind.

The sentence is balanced and divided into two almost identical parts, making it easy to repeat: “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.”

This rhetorical contrast highlights the difference between the two ideas in a way that makes the text resonant and has a lasting impact.

According to the latest ranking issued by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Warren Buffett’s wealth is approximately $149 billion.

Buffett is known for his deep commitment to giving back, having pledged to donate more than 99% of his wealth during his lifetime. He is one of the most philanthropic billionaires.

To date, he has donated nearly $65 billion, mostly through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and his children’s foundations, ensuring that the funds reach educational, health, and charitable initiatives around the world, according to Forbes.

In 2010, Buffett, in collaboration with Bill Gates, launched the Giving Pledge initiative, which aims to encourage other billionaires to donate at least half of their wealth to charity, becoming an important step in spreading a culture of giving among the richest people in the world.
